A reduced inertial gantry crane system, e.g. for fast processing cycles for machining large workpieces, has the gantry (4) made of a framework of lightweight struts (7) which define the outline of the gantry. The spaces between some of the framework are filled by panels (8) which reinforce the framework without undue increase in weight. A lightweight panel is obtained by sandwiching a hard foam inner between carbon fibre reinforced outer panels. The struts can be hollow and made of a carbon fibre reinforced material. |
