A software-based method for building audit rule sets for auditing electronic documents. In an exemplary embodiment, methods and systems including an editor, schemas, a processing engine, and sample documents are provided. The invention gives users a visual interface for building audit rule sets to examine electronic documents for compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
