PROGRESSIVE JPEG DECODING SYSTEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a progressing JPEG decoding system.

SOLUTION: An apparatus and a method of efficiently decoding progressive JPEG bit stream are disclosed. This provides a method of progressive JPEG decoding with proper memory efficiency by the minimum limit of a memory requirement. Instead of storing all the DCT coefficients of specific decoding scanning, non-zero coefficient index of the part of the DCT coefficient and the residual DCT coefficient are stored in either an original data format or a compressed format. The memory requirement for decoding a progressive JPEG picture can be made to the minimum limit according to the resolution of a display device in an actual use.
