PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dimethylolalkanoic acid solution effective for facilitating the handling of a dimethylolalkanoic acid and improving the compatibility and reactivity with a resin and safe to human body, a method for producing a water-based urethane resin proceeding uniform urethanization reaction, an adhesion promoter to increase the adhesiveness of a coating agent to various substrates and a coating agent compounded with the adhesiveness promoter. SOLUTION: The invention provides a dimethylolalkanoic acid solution produced by dissolving a dimethylolalkanoic acid in an alcohol compound having a molecular weight of≤400, a method for producing a water-based urethane resin by reacting the dimethylolalkanoic acid solution with an organic polyisocyanate and a polyol, a water-based urethane resin produced by the method, an adhesiveness promoter composed of the dimethylolalkanoic acid solution, and a coating agent compounded with the adhesiveness promoter.
