PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a full-color image of high quality on a rugged recording material by controlling a toner particle size to improve toner transferability on an intermediate transfer belt. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus 4 includes one or a plurality of image forming carriers 1 on which color component toner images in four colors are formed and carried and an intermediate transfer body 2 on which the color component toner images on the image forming carriers are temporarily transferred and held in an intermediate stage before transfer to a recording material 3, and color component toner images on the image forming carriers 1 are successively transferred to the intermediate transfer body 2 and then are collectively transferred to the recording material 3. In this image forming apparatus, d<SB>1</SB>>d<SB>4</SB>and d<SB>1</SB>≥d<SB>2</SB>≥d<SB>3</SB>≥d<SB>4</SB>(the number of identical particle sizes is two or less) are satisfied wherein d<SB>1</SB>, d<SB>2</SB>, d<SB>3</SB>, d<SB>4</SB>are first, second, third, and fourth developing toner particle sizes respectively in the order of transfer to the intermediate transfer body with respect to average toner particle sizes of color component toner images.
