The device has a temperature sensor (12) for determination of temperature of liquid fuel in a fuel tank. A pressure sensor (13) is provided for determination of pressure in vapor phase of the fuel tank. An arithmetic and logic unit (14) calculates partial pressure and mixing proportion between air and fuel in the fuel tank from values of pressure of oxygen. A control unit outputs a signal when value of pressure exceeds limit value. An independent claim is also included for a method for avoiding fuel tank explosions in an aircraft.
