<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus, method and program capable of selecting each person's image most suited for viewing, and synthesizing the images into a "backdrop" template image. <P>SOLUTION: In S105, an eye opening/closure detecting part 5a first specifies eye areas E where eyes exist from a plurality of face images of the same person; the eye areas E can be specified on the basis of the relative positional relationship between the person's face contour and eyes. The eye opening/closure detecting part 5a then detects the number of vertical black pixels within the eye areas E of the plurality of face images. Based on the number of vertical black pixels within each of the eye areas E, the eye opening/closure detecting part 5a specifies the face images where the eyes are closed. In S106, a face selecting part 6 selects one face image other than face images where the eyes are closed as a "best-shot" face image from among the face images classified for the same person.
