METHOD FOR DECIDING REFERENCE PICTURE IN PREDICTIVE CODING OF VIDEO SIGNAL

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reference picture deciding method for reducing arithmetic amounts by referring to a much fewer pictures when carrying out predictive coding.

SOLUTION: In a reference picture deciding method in the predictive coding of a video signal, a frame obtained by in-face encoding or a frame obtained by forward inter-face predictive coding with a predetermined frame interval is used as a standard frame, and a frame interposed between the standard frames is used as a reference field when carrying out bi-directional inter-face predictive coding, and the temporally sequential reference frames or the field of the frame and the previous frame obtained by di-directional inter-face predictive coding or the frame before the previous frame are used as reference pictures.
