PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external electrode type fluorescent lamp improved in darkness starting characteristic without bringing deterioration of light flux in lighting the lamp. SOLUTION: The fluorescent lamp includes external electrodes 31 and 32 on the respective peripheries of both ends of a glass tube having an inside surface on which a phosphor film 23 is formed, wherein a support member 33 in which an emissive material 24 is adhered at the position facing to the inside surface of at least one of the external electrodes 31 and 32 is provided in the glass tube, and the emissive material 24 is adhered to the support member 33 with a space L1 from the position (position A in the figure) of the end of the external electrode 31 on the central side of the glass tube to the end of the glass tube.
