<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation method for an internal combustion engine and a device for performing its method for avoiding flow rate of overflowing reaction agent as much as possible and arranging SCR catalyst in an exhaust region of the internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: In this operation method for the internal combustion engine 10 for arranging at least one SCR catalyst 14 in the exhaust region 12 of the internal combustion engine 10, supplying reaction agent to the SCR catalyst 14, and letting the reaction agent contribute to NOx inversion in the SCR catalyst 14, at least one scale for NOx concentration (dmNOxnK) generated on the downstream side of the SCR catalyst 14 is calculated.
