A drive for shaft(s) of a loom includes: drive-off device(s), aligned with and connected to the shaft, to be held in a stationary phase and moved in a moving phase; a controller for the actual speed of the drive-off device and thus the shaft; and a coupling device (associated with the drive) between a driver and a drive arrangement for transferring driving movement from the drive shaft. The coupling device comprises a first drive disk (21) (connected to the driver). a second drive disk (22) and a drive-off disk connectable to one of the driving disks by a switching catch movable between two stable positions by a bistable pretensioning device. An independent claim is included for a variant of the drive, in which the drive-off disk is connectable to a selected drive disk via a first switching catch or a second switching catch (27a) located at a distance from the first catch.
