A catalyst is accommodated in a housing (9) through which excess air and exhaust gas flow. Nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas are transferred to the catalyst such that the nitrogen oxides are at least partially removed from the exhaust gas. The catalyst containing the nitrogen oxides is converted into ammonia.
