PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recoil starter for an engine in which failure in engine-starting is not caused by promptly unlocking a locking mechanism by means of an unlocking driven part, and correctly fitting a drive-stop operation means into a drive-stopping part, and a unidirectional-rotation transmission device on the output side is prevented from being deformed/broken at engine-starting time. SOLUTION: When a measuring means for measuring a number of winds of an elastic body has advanced from an original position to a specified position in interlocking with pull of a starting rope, an unlocking main-part 12A runs idly in a specified delay distance L1 to reach the unlocking driven part 12B, which is switched from an unlock-retention position 12Ba to a locking-permission position 12Bb. Thus, a 2nd passive part 23 of the drive-stop operation means 21 of a locking mechanism 10 is released from the unlocking driven part 12B, and the drive-stop operation 21 is switched from the unlocking position 21a to a locking position 21b to hinder rotation of the output ring 5.
