Method for testing oxygen permeability especially for food packaging using a hydrogen and nitrogen mixture applied to a test sample and with a sensor on one side of the sample

A simple and rapid testing system for the permeability of oxygen through different materials, e.g. food packaging, has the test material (2) fitted between an inlet chamber (A) and a test chamber (B) and with a hydrogen/nitrogen mixture applied to the inlet chamber. A sensor in the test chamber monitors any hydrogen permeating though the test material. Suitable sensors include FETs and other semiconductor components. The test strip can be replaced by a test container, e.g. a PET plastic bottle, with the sensor positioned inside the bottle and the bottle placed inside a test chamber.
