PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original coal composition capable of manufacturing a carbon material for an electrode capable of increasing an electrostatic capacity per the volume of an electric dipole-layer capacitor.

SOLUTION: The original coal composition is used as the carbon material for the electrode for the electric dipole-layer capacitor by carrying out activation treatment. In the original coal composition of the carbon material for the electrode for the electric dipole-layer capacitor, the value of micro strength is 5 to 30% and a volatile component is less than a mass% from 1.3 mass% to 6 mass%.
