<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of suppressing image defects, reducing the down-time of the apparatus to improve productivity at a user, and reducing the consumption of consumables such as toner. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus comprising an intermediate transfer body, an intermediate transfer body cleaning means and a decision means for deciding toner quantity on the intermediate transfer body is provided with a plurality of cleaning modes, i.e. an intermediate transfer body cleaning mode to be periodically operated at different timing or periods and an intermediate transfer body cleaning mode to be irregularly operated.
