PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus in which high quality image data can be acquired by eliminating variation in the document carrying position at the image reading position in the document carrying passage and preventing incidence of stray light, and image processing is easy after reading an image. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus 1 comprises a first image reading means 5 for reading the image of the first surface of a document being carried on the document carrying passage 4 in a predetermined direction, and a second reading means 6 for reading the image of the second surface of the document. On the upstream side of the image reading position A by the image reading means 5 in the document carrying direction, a carry roller 11 and the bend 12 of the document carrying passage 4 are arranged in this order along the document carrying direction. On the upstream side of the image reading position B by the image reading means 6 in the document carrying direction, a carry roller 16 and the bend 14 of the document carrying passage 4 are arranged in this order along the document carrying direction.
