PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an iridium complex excellent in color purity, external quantum efficiency and luminescent efficiency, and to provide an organic electroluminescent device using the complex. SOLUTION: The electroluminescent device is such that a luminescent layer or a plurality of organic compound thin layers including the same is(are) formed in between a pair of electrodes. In this device, at least one layer is a layer containing at least one iridium complex of the general formula(1)[ wherein, R<SP>1</SP>is a substituent; ring A is a (substituted) nitrogen-containing heterocyclic ring; Z is a bivalent group; L is a monovalent anionic ligand; n<SP>1</SP>is an integer of 1-3, and n<SP>2</SP>is an integer of 0-2, wherein (n<SP>1</SP>+n<SP>2</SP>)=3 ].
