PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processor for improving the reproducibility of characters in a pattern, while keeping gradation of the pattern. SOLUTION: The image processor 3 comprises a character pattern region determining unit 35 for determining the patterns and characters of document image on the basis of color image data inputted, a pattern background character determining unit 36 for determining characters in the patterns of document image, on the basis of the color image data inputted, and a gradation reproducing processing unit 40 for screen-processing characters, in patterns with the number of the screen lines being higher than that of the pattern. Reproducibility of characters in the pattern can be improved, and gradation of pattern can also be maintained by reproducing the number of screen lines assigned to characters in the pattern with the number of screen lines being higher (higher resolution) than that of the pattern.
