PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flat surface display device whose service life is prolonged with which stable display luminance characteristics are maintained for a long time with economically advantageous structure by improving deterioration in display luminance due to drive for a long time on a circuit and a method for controlling luminance of the display device. SOLUTION: A power control part 6 executes a display panel management processing routine in starting (power on) the flat surface display device, acquires a corrected voltage value set in accordance with the update time from a panel management table when it is judged that accumulated drive time of a display panel 1 reaches update time, increases anode voltage (anode) to be applied to the display panel 1 based on the corrected voltage value and updates anode voltage (anode) to be applied to the display panel 1 afterward.
