An electronic device (100) includes a processor (102) and at least one memory (108, 106, 114). The memory (114) maintains instructions (130), in the form of program codes, that when executed by the processor (102) causes the processor (102) to save the initial state information of the electronic device (100). Control of the electronic device (100) is then transferred to a principal operating system (110). After the principal operating system (110) has been launched and upon receiving an operating system shut down indication signal, control of the electronic device (100) is transferred to an alternate operating system (116) without performing a power on self test.
