PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cathode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, capable of showing an superior charging/discharging characteristics and restraining the reaction of the cathode activating material and an electrolyte occurring at charging.

SOLUTION: The cathode active material for the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, having a lamination structure contains lithium-containing transition metal oxide, containing at least cobalt as a transition metal, and at least one part of the surface of the lithium-containing transition metal oxide is covered by a surface treatment layer comprising lithium cobaltate of a low-temperature phase.
