PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device effectively utilizing fluorescence from a fluorescent material layer as much as possible for improving brightness and elongating the life of a fluorescent material. SOLUTION: The image display device comprises a light shielding layer patterned and formed on a front substrate opposed to a back substrate on which a number of electron emission elements are arranged, the fluorescent material layer consisting of a plurality of fluorescent material segments provided in an area where no light shielding layer exists, and a metal back layer 7A where at least one directional vertical cross section of the long and short sides of the front substrate as a vertical cross section facing the fluorescent material segments has a substantially recessed reflection plane.
