PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display apparatus capable of preventing the deterioration of durability of a light source and a shutter device by suppressing the temperature rise in the light source and the shutter device when the shutter device is closed. SOLUTION: The shutter device 21 can switches between a shielded state (referred to as the closed state of the shutter device) and a passing state (referred to as the open state of the shutter device) of illuminating light emitted from the lamp of an illuminating apparatus 1. When a system control circuit 40 receives information that the shutter device 21 is in the closed state from a detecting part 47, instructions to reduce the supply voltage to the lamp are given to a lamp power source 44.
