PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an expansion joint capable of controlling the closure of a groove formed in the surface of a hard rubber even if it is placed in a road or the like on which big load acts in the vertical direction. SOLUTION: The expansion joint is equipped with the hard rubber 12 placed between concretes 1 and 2 having a voidσand having an upper surface 13 wherein outer grooves 15 and 16 approximately in parallel with the voidσand a lower surface 14 wherein lower grooves 17 and 18 are formed. It is constituted by combining a base member 21 stepping across the voidσand bottom plates 24 and 25 with the hard rubber 12. It is so placed that it can adjoin the outer grooves 15 and 16 on an opposite side to the voidσtoward the upper surface 13 from the bottom plates 24 and 25, and it is equipped with square cylinders 26 and 28 integrally constituted of the hard rubber 12 extended in approximately parallel with the outer grooves 15 and 16. It is placed to the upper surface 13 side located between the voidσand the outer grooves 15 and 16 and rather than bottom sections 15a and 16a of the outer grooves and the lower groove 17 and, at the same time, it is equipped with top boards 32 and 33 integrally constituted of the hard rubber 12.
