An automatic tappet clearance adjusting device (10), comprising an adjusting unit (34) adjusting the projected amount of a rocker arm (22) by advancing and retreating an adjust screw (18) to and from the tip of the rocker arm, a pressure setting part (40) electrically controlling the pressure (P1) of an air supply source part (38) based on the measurement signals of a primary side pressure sensor (58) measuring the pressure (P1) of the air supply source part so that the pressure (P1) becomes a specified one, a supply pipeline (44) allowing the air supply source part (38) to communicate with a combustion chamber (28) through a variable orifice (42), and a control mechanism part (54) controlling the adjusting unit (34) based on measurement signals of a secondary side pressure sensor (52) measuring the pressure (P2) of the supply pipeline (44). The pressure (P2) is set to 1.5 kPa by the pressure setting part (40) and the variable orifice (42).
