<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a radar apparatus which detects with high precision an object existing in areas ranging from a short-distance area to a long-distance area. <P>SOLUTION: In the pulse radar apparatus 1, during a short-distance mode operation, an oscillator 12 generates a carrier wave having a constant frequency, a pulse generation section 13 repeatedly generates a first pulse having a relatively short pulse width, and a modulation section 14 generates a first high-frequency pulse by modulating the carrier wave with the first pulse. During a long-distance mode, the oscillator 12 generates a chirp signal swept between low frequencies and high frequencies, the pulse generation section 13 generates a second pulse having a relatively long pulse width, and the modulation section 14 generates a second high-frequency pulse by modulating the chirp signal with the second pulse.
