PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoelectric conversion element having a sharp spectral characteristics and an imaging element (preferably color imaging sensor), and to further provide a photoelectric conversion element and an imaging element of high photoelectric conversion rate excellent in high durability. SOLUTION: The photoelectric conversion element, imaging element and the method of applying voltage these elements in which the photoelectric conversion element has an organic photoelectric conversion membrane sandwiched by at least two electrodes, including a positive hole transfer photoelectric conversion membrane or an electron transfer photoelectric conversion membrane, having at least one charge transfer layer that transfers the positive hole or the electron generated in the photoelectric conversion membrane, and the half-width of a membrane absorbing spectrum having the maximum on the longest wavelength side of the organic photoelectric conversion membrane is 50 nm or more and 150 or more.
