PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a lactone from the corresponding anhydride by using a non-toxic and safely handleable reducing agent. SOLUTION: The lactone represented by formula (1) (wherein, groups R<SB>1</SB>to R<SB>4</SB>denote each independently a hydrogen atom, a 1-18C alkyl group or a 2-18C alkenyl group or R<SB>1</SB>and R<SB>2</SB>and/or R<SB>3</SB>and R<SB>4</SB>together form a 5-12C cycloalkyl group or a 5-12C cycloalkenyl group; and the groups may contain a 1-6C alkyl group or a 2-6C alkenyl group as a substituent) is produced as follows.
