PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rodenticide composed of a water-retentive rodenticidal material. SOLUTION: The non-toxic rodenticide comprises a water-retentive material such asα-cellulose (10) encapsulated with an enteric coating (11) of a gastroresistant material such as a glassy amylase or an acrylic polymer. The enteric coating can be a pH-sensitive material, a redox-sensitive material or a material enzymatically broken down by enzymes in the gastrointestinal system so as to release the water-retentive material at a site such as the caecum, e.g. where it is particularly effective in disrupting water transport and ion transport through the gut wall. The effect causes the rat to weaken and die in a humane manner. In a variant, the water-retentive material is incorporated in a matrix of the gastroresistant material. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
