PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element causing no peel-off or falling-out of a glass layer, and a method for production thereof. SOLUTION: In the optical element composed of the glass layer and a base material comprising a metal or ceramic, the base material is covered by and involved in the glass layer, and a part of the base material has a contour approximate to the optically functional face of the glass layer. The glass layer of the optical element is previously joined to the circumference of the base material before forming the optically functional face, or is joined during formation of that face.
