PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for joining at least two platy workpieces which realize a high quality joined part, consequently minimize the deformation of the working piece in the joined zone and its vicinity. SOLUTION: The method for joining at least two platy workpieces with the use of a fastening tool and the apparatus for driving the fastening tool are provided, wherein the fastening tool is provided with a punch for applying the punch force for performing the joining operation and a clamp for applying the clamp force to the workpiece in the joining zone. During joining-operation, the punch applies large punch force for performing the joining operation and the clamp does not substantially apply the clamp force but enables free material deformation to be done in the joining zone. After joining operation, the punch and the clamp simultaneously apply large forces and reduce the material deformation of the workpiece and compress the workpiece in the joined zone.
