PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-performance liquid crystal display device which can be manufactured in high yield at low cost. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal composition containing liquid crystal molecules 1 and a polymerizable compound which can be polymerized with ultraviolet rays or a combination of ultraviolet rays and heat is arranged between a couple of substrates 2 and 3, and irradiated with ultraviolet rays which do not include wavelength components of≤313 nm to polymerize the polymerizable compound, so that a liquid crystal layer is formed; and ruggedness 4 is provided on a liquid crystal contact surface, or an electrode is provided with a slit pattern, or the ruggedness is provided on the liquid crystal contact surface and the electrode is provided with the slit pattern.
