PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a servo signal inspection apparatus and a servo signal inspection method by which servo signal quality of a magnetic tape can be measured/evaluated with sufficient resolution. SOLUTION: This apparatus is provided with: a servo signal inspection head reading a timing based servo signal recorded in a running magnetic tape; a peak detecting means detecting pulse peak from the timing based servo signal; a time interval measuring means comparing the detected time interval of the pulse peak with the reference clock signal and measuring them; and an inspection means inspecting quality of the timing based servo signal on the basis of the measured time interval of the pulse peak. A period T[s] of the reference clock used for the time interval measuring means and running speed v[m/s] of the magnetic tape in the servo signal inspection head are made T×v<80 nm.
