PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease the quantity of reflected light from each solid-state image pickup device on each light exiting face by adjusting spectral characteristics of trimming filters and to obtain preferable images without having ghost and flare. SOLUTION: A color separation optical system of this invention is equipped with a wavelength selection filter which is arranged on a prescribed face 12b of a plurality of prisms 11, 12, 13, and which has such spectral characteristics that it selectively transmits and reflects the light within the range of prescribed wavelengths. Moreover, the system is equipped with trimming filters 15, 16, each having a light absorbing layer containing coloring matter and a light absorbing layer including a coating layer for adjusting spectral transmittance on light exiting faces 13a, 12a of the prisms 13, 12. The system is characterized in that each spectral transmitting characteristic of coating layers 151, 161 of the trimming filters 15, 16 is set so that the half value of the rising of the curve of the spectral transmittance of the coating layers 151, 161 is positioned at a short wavelength side rather than the half value of the rising of the wavelength characteristic transfer curve of the light reaching the coating layers 151, 161.
