PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device capable of securely and correctly shielding a non-display area from light by a light-shield mask. SOLUTION: The projection type display device 100 includes: a light source 120; light-modulation devices 151, 152, and 153 for modulating the light of the light source and forming an image; projection devices 161, 162, and 163 for projecting the image modulated by the light modulation devices; the light shield mask 134 disposed on an optical path and used to shield from unnecessary light; a sensing element 212, as a displacement detecting means, for detecting displacement between the non-display area of the image and the light-shield range of the light-shield mask; a mask positioning means for correcting the light-shield range of the light-shield mask based upon the detection signal of the sensing element; a control means 214 for outputting, for example, a control signal; and a drive means 216 for positioning the light-shield mask according to the control signal.
