PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water treatment apparatus which enables an increase in chemical cleaning interval of the apparatus and improvement in operating efficiency of the apparatus by efficiently removing deposit adhering to the surface of a membrane, and its operating method. SOLUTION: In the operating method of the water treatment apparatus which purifies water to be treated by using a membrane module divided into a raw water chamber and a permeate chamber with the membrane, gas introduction into the raw water chamber is carried out by the sucking operation from the raw water chamber side to discharge the deposit on the surface of the membrane to the outside of a system.
