1291798 Collapsible steering columns FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 3 Aug 1971 [2 Sept 1970] 36382/71 Heading B7H In an energy absorbing steering column a torque transmitting component, such as a gear shift tube, comprises inner and outer telescopic elements 22, 23 with a recess 36 formed in at least one of their adjoining portions to receive a protruding portion 34 of a resilient retainer 29 exerting a radially directed force on the elements, the protruding portion 34 being displaceable from the recess and compressed between the adjoining portions upon relative axial displacement of the elements. The adjoining portions may have complementary D- shaped cross-sections with the retainer 29 which may be spring steel or resilient plastics material compressed between the two flat portions thereof. |
