Fire door with panels having intumescent and glass fibre containing layers

A fire door comprises timber framing components comprising a stile at each side 2 and a mullion 7 therebetween and top 4, central 5 and bottom 6 rails. The door further comprises a panel 8 retained by timber beads within each space formed by the timber framing components 2, 4, 5, 6, 7. Each panel comprises a laminate of three plywood sheets, a sheet of glass fibre containing cloth 14 adhered to the inner faces of the outer two plywood sheets 12 and an intumescent containing sheet 15 adhered to each surface of the inner plywood sheet. Air spaces may be provided between the opposed surfaces of each glass fibre containing cloth 14 and the respective intumescent containing sheet 15. Each glass fibre containing cloth 14 may comprise a woven ceramic cloth which may include a filament matrix. The outer edges of the stiles 2 and the top 4 and bottom 6 rails may include recesses for smoke seals. The other edges of the framing components 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 may include recesses for receiving the panel 8 edges. The framing components 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and the beads may be formed from hardwood.
