When P contacts 23 a circuit is made through a relay A which causes the cut off machine 10 to clamp itself to and move with the billet P and to start its cut. At the same time the spring loaded drum 18 reels up the cable 22, and the carriage 10 pulls the cable back when it returns to its starting position as that the rod 23 also returns. The drum 20 is powered by a motor 21 and read out devices are provided which shows the starting position of rod 23, the position of the rod being adjusted in either direction by first energizing the motor 21 to run in one direction or the other.
