A large number of ECU's (Electronic Control Units) are present in vehicles, which are interconnected. There is an inherent problem in switching circuits known as oscillation or ringing. When a switch is switched off at time t2, the output voltage drops to the off state. However, an oscillation also begins S2 wherin the voltage takes a long time to settle to the steady state off voltage. A diode is place across the output terminals effectively limiting the current flow in the reverse direction, and reducing the amplitude of the oscillation S1. The diode can be replaced with a Zener diode to further improve the result.
