Late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins and the genes encoding them from the insect Polypedium vanderplanki are disclosed. These LEA genes, termed pvLEA2, pvLEA2 and pvLEA3 play a role in cryptobiosis. Also disclosed are methods for conferring desiccation resistance to a cell or organism comprising expression one or more of these genes in a host cell. |
