PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotation detection apparatus capable of highly flexibly and highly precisely detecting rotation by excluding spatial constrictions even in the case of detecting the rotation of input and output shafts etc. of an automatic transmission. SOLUTION: In the rotation detection apparatus, a sensor part comprising a magnetoresistive element for detecting changes in the angle of a magnetic vector as changes in resistance value and its processing circuit part are integrated into a circuit as one IC chip 11 and provided in such a way as to be opposed to a rotor RT comprising helical gears used for an automatic transmission. A mode on which the surface of arrangement of the magnetoresistive element is set at a surface which intersects with the direction of inclination of each helical gear of the rotor RT at right angles is adopted as a mode of arrangement of the magnetoresistive element of the sensor part to such a helical-gear type rotor RT.
