A pointing device (70) having a moveable puck (76) that moves in a predetermined field of motion by applying a lateral force thereto is disclosed. A first linear spring (72) is attached to the puck (76), the first spring (72) applying a first force to the puck (76) at each location in the field of motion. A second linear spring (74) is also attached to the puck (76), the second spring (74) applying a second force to the puck (76) at each location in the field of motion. The first and second springs (72, 74) return the puck (76) to a predetermined location in the field of motion when the lateral force is not applied tot the puck (76). The first linear spring (72) is folded around a bending point (82) and attached to a portion of the pointing device (70) that is stationary with respect to the puck (76).
