An improved method for controlling an automatic transmission has the gearchange sequence interrupted and updated if the driver commands alter during gearchange. The controller prepares a target time for completing the gearchange sequence and if the driver command changes, calculates a second target time while stopping the first sequence and replacing it with the second in order to facilitate the new gearchange operation without a perceptible increase in time for the whole process.
