PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate the structure of an optical encoder for detecting a displacement of two relatively displacing objects. SOLUTION: The optical encoder comprises a main scale 11 fixed to one relatively displacing member not shown, the main scale being formed of a transparent material having a main grating 12 formed on one surface side and a reflecting means 18 formed on the reverse side; a light source 13 emitting an illuminating light, which is fixed to the other relatively displacing member not shown; an index scale 16 having a plurality of light receiving gratings 15 differed in phase for further limiting the light emitted from the light source 13 and limited by the main grating 12; and a plurality of light receiving elements 17 detecting the illuminating light limited by the main grating 12 and the light receiving gratings 15.
