The method is for the operating of a device for the catalytic conversion of unwanted constituents of exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine into less harmful constituents entails measuring a parameter the value of which significantly changes during the start of operation of a catalyser assembly (3), and deactivating a heater unit (6) as soon as a threshold value of the said parameter indicating starting of the catalyser assembly is achieved or is exceeded in a predetermined direction. An independent claim is included for a device for the catalytic conversion of unwanted components of exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine into less harmful components has a heater unit (6) installed inside a section (7) of a catalyser assembly (3) which when the heater is not available is first set in operation in a cold start phase, and/or is at a distance from the axial ends of the catalyser assembly by a measurement which is about 20 per cent of the axial longitudinal extent of the catalyser assembly.
