<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reliable seal to prevent escape of the excrement while permitting discharge of gas through the seal or from around the seal when the seal is used. <P>SOLUTION: The ostoma seal 14 is described for the controlled evacuation ostomy appliance (for an artificial anus, etc.). The ostoma seal has liquid-responsive property such as a hydrophobic, or hydrophilic, or absorptive, and has a non smooth surface such as a microstructure scale. The non smooth surface may have a tortuous channel, a protruding seal or a confronting apertured or a porous layer structure.
