<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow an image forming apparatus, which forms an image on a conveyed recording sheet, to form the image at an accurate position on the recording sheet by detecting the width-directional position of the recording sheet and also keep the processing speed of image formation fast by detecting the position of the recording sheet in a short time. <P>SOLUTION: A side edge detection sensor 31 moves at right angles to the conveyance direction of the recording sheet P to detect a side edge of the recording sheet. A plurality of reference positions are set within the movement range of the side edge detection sensor, which moves between a side edge detection position and the reference positions to detect the position of the recording sheet from movement distances.
