PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for a vehicle which can lengthen the life of a foot brake by obtaining an engine brake force during speed reduction demand. SOLUTION: A control device 1 for a vehicle V controls at least one of a valve lift Liftin, a cam phase Cain, and a compression ratio Cr of an internal combustion engine 3, in the vehicle V having a transmission 90. At least the aforementioned one of the valve lift Liftin, the cam phase Cain, and the compression ratio Cr is set to values, different from each other, every a plurality of gear ratios, a gear ratio of the transmission 90 is detected (a step 20) and the presence or absence of the speed change demand is decided (steps 31-35). When it is decided that there is a speed reduction demand, at least one of the valve lift Liftin, the cam phase Cain, and the compression ratio Cr is decided (steps 26-28) according to a detected speed change ratio NGEAR of the transmission 90 and based on the aforementioned setting.
